Residents and businesses in the Route 151 area, or the "Sunrise Side of the Blue Ridge Mountains," take the Buy Fresh Buy Local mantra pretty seriously. Spent grain from local craft breweries is fed to the local cattle. Wind power companies are selling back energy to the Central Virginia Electric Cooperative, whose renewable energy programs make it a national model. Join the community by supporting it from the roots and discover the surprisingly drastic difference in taste and quality.
WHERE TO START . . .
Saunders Brothers Market in Nelson County. Here you will find peaches, apples, Asian pears, vegetables, flowering shrubs, annuals and perennials from their orchard just up the road. Stock up on local produce, buy some fresh flowers, try the mouth-watering homemade peach ice cream, and visit the onsite farm antique museum. Market opens at 9am!
Seamans’ Orchard is a short drive from Saunders Brothers Market, located at the very foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Here you can pick your own strawberries, cherries, blueberries, apples and pumpkins. This is a great place to spend a cool morning or warm afternoon in the sun. Bring a hat and a friend!
Next stop, Nelson Farmers' Market Co-Operative. The Nelson Co-Op has a variety of vendors eager to educate consumers and turn them on to new foods. In addition to local produce, baked goods, honey and jam... you'll also find grass-fed beef, a wood-fired pizza oven (on the back of a big red truck), handmade items such as bark baskets and leather accessories, a selection of unusual foods such as native paw paws, hickory smoked peppers and seedless che fruit, and LIVE MUSIC! Market musicians generally set up early and play til noon every Saturday, April through October.
Craft Breweries, Vineyards, Wineries, Cideries & Distilleries | Route 151 is a designated Virginia scenic byway and a great travel destination for wine, craft beer, hard cider and outdoor recreation lovers. Stop by for lunch, a flight tasting and live music. Return home with a growler of your favorite beer and grab a bottle of wine for your home collection.
